Understanding halitosis and when professional dental care may help

Bad breath happens to everyone occasionally, particularly after eating strongly flavoured foods or first thing in the morning. When it continues despite brushing, however, it can become embarrassing and may indicate that something in the mouth needs attention.

A dental hygienist may be able to help when persistent bad breath is associated with plaque, tartar or gum problems. The right solution depends on the cause, so professional assessment is more useful than repeatedly trying to disguise the problem with mints or mouthwash.

What causes bad breath?

Bad breath, also known as halitosis, can have several possible causes. Bacteria can collect on the teeth, between the teeth, along the gumline and on the tongue. Food debris, gum disease, tooth decay, infection and a dry mouth can also contribute.

Smoking, alcohol and strong-smelling foods may make breath worse. In some cases, persistent bad breath can be associated with a medical issue outside the mouth, such as acid reflux or tonsillitis. This is why it is important not to assume that every case has the same cause.

How can a dental hygienist help?

If plaque and tartar are contributing to the problem, a professional clean can remove deposits that ordinary brushing cannot. The hygienist can also assess the condition of your gums and identify signs of inflammation or gum disease that may be linked to the odour.

Just as importantly, a hygienist can help you improve your home-care routine. Advice may cover brushing technique, cleaning between the teeth with floss or interdental brushes, cleaning the tongue and caring for dentures, implants, bridges or orthodontic appliances.

At N6 Dental Platinum, suitable patients may also be offered Airflow cleaning to help remove biofilm and stubborn surface staining. Your hygienist will advise which type of professional cleaning is appropriate for you.

Can a scale and polish cure bad breath?

A scale and polish may improve bad breath when plaque, tartar and associated gum inflammation are important causes. It cannot guarantee a permanent cure, and it will not resolve causes unrelated to professional cleaning.

The benefit will also be difficult to maintain without effective daily cleaning. Plaque begins forming again after an appointment, so brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between the teeth every day remain essential.

What can you do at home?

Keep your teeth, gums and tongue clean. Brush gently twice a day for around two minutes using fluoride toothpaste, and clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes. Avoid rinsing your mouth with water immediately after brushing, as this washes away the concentrated fluoride left by the toothpaste.

Drink water regularly, particularly if your mouth feels dry. Sugar-free chewing gum may also help stimulate saliva for some people. Mouthwash can make the mouth feel fresher, but it should not replace brushing and interdental cleaning or be used simply to conceal an ongoing problem. If using mouthwash, use it at a different time than brushing your teeth. For example, after breakfast.

When should you seek professional advice?

Arrange a dental appointment if bad breath does not improve after a few weeks of good oral care, or if it occurs alongside painful, bleeding or swollen gums, toothache or a loose adult tooth. A dentist can check for decay, infection and other possible causes, while the hygienist can support professional cleaning and gum care.

If the dental team cannot find a cause within the mouth, they may advise you to speak to your GP about other possibilities. Persistent bad breath deserves a proper assessment rather than continued attempts to cover it up.
