The temporomandibular joint connects your jaw to your skull. It is the “hinge” which allows you to eat, yawn, chew and talk; indeed anything that requires opening the mouth or moving the jaw from side to side.
Any problems with this joint can lead to pain, sometimes quite severe. It is thought that up to 30% of adults experience TMJ disorder at some point during their lives.
You may experience some of the following:
Your dentist will move your jaw through a range of movements to assess the problem. We may also press lightly on the face to further examine where the pain is coming from and consider the use of X-rays or other scans to assist the diagnosis.
We will then provide a treatment plan which can range from simple exercises at home through to the use of a splint or mouth guard to help alleviate pressure caused by an uneven bite or tooth grinding.
In more extreme cases, surgery may be required at which stage we will refer you to a dental specialist to discuss broader treatment options.
